The second largest horticulture region in Europe is centered in the north of Limburg. This area is known as Greenport Venlo and is characterized by a large concentration of companies active in the agribusiness cluster:
- cultivation, fresh produce, manufacturing, logistics and trade
- 3.400 horticulture companies employing 24.000 people
- covering 18.000 ha of production area
- € 600 million turnover in fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants
- > € 1 billion turnover including food processing, suppliers, transport and logistics
- 30 million consumer market within a 2-hour distance
Greenport Venlo has the ambition to become the leading food and flowers region in Europe:
- Fresh Centers of Excellence: education, research institutes and businesses work together on innovation, process and product development of the food chain
- Greenport Academy: top education for present and future entrepreneurs, network events
- World Horticulture Fair Floriade in 2012, expanding the cultivation area with 250 hectares
- Expansion of logistics hub function of fruit and vegetables auction ZON with the new tri-modal terminal in Venlo
The main agribusiness complexes in the region are:
- expertise and trade centre for flowers and plants Flora Holland
- business parks Trade Port Oost and ZON Fresh Park (127 hectares)
- glasshouse horticulture concentration areas Californië (235 ha) and Siberië (200 ha)
- agribusiness education and research institutes in Horst and nearby Wageningen
